HIGH COURT GALLE

The history of the Galle High Court is deeply intertwined with the colonial eras of Sri Lanka, evolving from early administrative and military structures into a formalized judicial complex over centuries.

Located in the historic Court Square, the development of the court system in this region reflects the significant transition from Dutch military justice to the modernized British legal frameworks, eventually paving the way for the prominent architectural landmarks we see functioning today.

Dutch Era

The site of Court Square originally held older administrative and military structures. This included a building used as a barracks for Malay soldiers that later functioned as a Dutch courthouse where public punishments occurred.

British Takeover

After taking control in 1796–1798, Governor Frederick North reformed the local legal system, ending public lashings and executions to build formal magistrate and district judicial structures.

Current Complex

The prominent current high court and district court buildings inside the Fort were established in their present architectural style by 1927, blending classical colonial features like arched windows and high-columned white facades.
